Homestay

Homestay is an accommodation option that allows international students to live with an Australian family.

A well-screened and interviewed Australian offers their home and lifestyle to a student, and offers them security, emotional support and a chance to practice their English skills.

Homestay placements are generally placed within 25 minutes from the university or educational institution if at all possible. This is of course dependent on booking in advance rather than last minute.

A homestay placement will generally include the following:

• Own bedroom
• Use of household facilities including family bathroom, kitchen and living areas
• Breakfast and dinner (lunch as an option)

Students are required to participate in the life of the family that may include assisting with household chores (eg washing dishes, keeping room clean). Generally the host will undertake laundry.

Who should use Homestay?

• High school students or underage students
• First year students to allow for a secure period of adjustments. Often this may only be required for 6-8 weeks, before longer term accommodation options are considered
• ELICOS language students – an ideal forum to practice English skills

What are the advantages in using Homestay?

• Safe and secure environment with fully screened families
• Able to practice English skills
• No need to worry about connection of utilities No need to purchase utensils
• Able to be booked for either short term contracts or long term contracts
• The student will not be lonely and will have opportunity for social interaction
• Relatively inexpensive option (approximately $200AUD per week)
